Description
A substantial studio pottery bowl with a strong sculptural presence, expressive glaze work, and an intriguing unidentified signature.
Measuring approximately 280mm in diameter and weighing 1840g, this is not a delicate table bowl but a substantial ceramic object with considerable visual and physical weight.
The body has been formed with a broad circular profile and two integrated handles. Its lower exterior retains warm reddish-brown clay tones and pronounced horizontal throwing lines, while the upper section is covered in a pale grey-green glaze with fine crazing and scattered iron-like speckling.
Around the exterior runs a broad band of dark brown and olive glaze. Rather than appearing mechanically controlled, the glaze pools, breaks and changes density across the surface, producing colors ranging from translucent olive and amber brown to almost black.
The interior is even more expressive.
Over the quiet grey-green ground, broad brown brush-like forms create an abstract composition of sweeping curves, loops and plant-like shapes. Areas of reddish clay or glaze break through the darker decoration, producing an unusually rich and layered surface.
The decoration does not read as a conventional repeated pattern. Instead, it has the spontaneous character associated with postwar European studio pottery, where the potter treated the ceramic surface almost as a painter might treat a canvas.
The underside is largely unglazed, revealing the warm granular clay body and concentric traces of wheel forming. Most importantly, an incised handwritten signature is clearly visible on the base.
At present, this signature has not been conclusively identified.
The bowl deserves particular attention because several characteristics — its substantial wheel-thrown construction, muted grey-green ground, brown and olive flowing glazes, exposed reddish clay and freely executed decoration — are visually comparable to Danish studio pottery produced during the 1960s and 1970s.
Helle Allpass (1932–2000) is one relevant point of comparison. She was a Danish ceramic artist from a family of potters and established her own studio north of Copenhagen in the 1960s. Surviving documented works include both smaller vessels and large wheel-thrown sculptural ceramics, often combining natural clay surfaces with expressive glazes. C20Ceramics
However, documented Helle Allpass pieces commonly bear variations of the marks “Allpass” or “Allpass Danmark,” and the signature on this bowl does not clearly correspond to those documented examples. Keramiksignatur
For this reason, we do not attribute this bowl definitively to Helle Allpass.
It is presented instead as an unidentified Scandinavian studio pottery work, possibly Danish and possibly dating from around the 1960s–1970s. The Helle Allpass comparison is provided only as a stylistic observation and not as an authentication.
Regardless of unresolved authorship, the bowl stands on its own as a striking piece of studio ceramics. Its 28cm scale, heavy construction, powerful handles, exposed clay and painterly glaze make it particularly effective as a centerpiece or sculptural object in a Scandinavian Modern, Mid Century Modern, Wabi Sabi or contemporary interior.
The unidentified signature also makes the piece worthy of further research.

幅広い円形の胴に左右二つの把手を設け、下半部には赤褐色の土肌と轆轤による水平の成形痕を残しています。一方、上部から内側には淡い灰緑色の釉薬が施され、細かな貫入と鉄分を思わせる斑点が器面に複雑な表情を与えています。
外側には褐色からオリーブ色の太い釉帯が巡ります。
その色は均一ではなく、釉薬の厚みや流れによって、透明感のあるオリーブ、飴色を帯びた褐色、そして黒に近い深い色調へと変化しています。
さらに印象的なのが見込みの装飾です。
静かな灰緑色の地に、大きな曲線や渦、植物を思わせる形が褐色の釉で自由に描かれています。その中から赤褐色の色彩が部分的に現れ、複数の釉薬と素地が重なり合う非常に豊かな表面をつくっています。
規則的な文様というより、陶器の表面を一枚のキャンバスとして扱ったような即興性のある表現です。
底部は大部分が露胎となっており、粒子を含んだ温かな土肌と轆轤成形の痕跡を見ることができます。そして底部には、筆記体による明瞭な刻銘があります。
ただし、現時点ではこのサインの作者を特定できていません。
この器について注目したいのは、その造形と釉薬表現です。
大型の轆轤成形、灰緑色の地釉、褐色からオリーブ色へ変化する流動的な釉、赤褐色の土肌を意図的に残した構成、そして自由な抽象装飾には、1960〜70年代頃のデンマークを含む北欧スタジオ陶芸との共通性が見られます。
比較対象の一人として挙げられるのが、デンマークの陶芸家**Helle Allpass（1932–2000）**です。

Scandinavian ModernやMid Century Modernはもちろん、Wabi Sabi的な空間にもよく馴染む、非常に存在感のあるヴィンテージ・スタジオポタリーです。
そして底部に残された未解読のサインそのものが、この器に今後の研究余地を残しています。
作者については慎重な判断を必要としますが、土、造形、釉薬、絵付けが一体となった力強い表情を持つ大型陶芸作品です。
