Description
A striking 14-piece vintage ceramic tableware set by Aegitna of Vallauris, France, dating approximately to the 1950s–1960s.
The first impression is unmistakably Mid-Century Mediterranean: a rich raspberry-pink glaze covers the softly rounded forms, while deep violet leaves and flowers, accented with touches of warm orange, create a bold botanical composition. The contrast is particularly beautiful on the tall pitcher, where the floral decoration rises across its tapered body beneath a sculptural pouring spout and generously curved handle.
The handled bowls repeat the same vivid pink palette. Their interiors carry floral decoration, giving the set a strong visual unity when arranged together on a table. Slight variations between the motifs contribute to the individual character expected of decorated studio pottery rather than the mechanical uniformity of mass-produced tableware.
Vallauris, on the French Riviera in southeastern France, has a long history of pottery production. The town became particularly important to modern ceramics during the 20th century, when its traditional pottery industry developed alongside a flourishing community of artists and ceramic workshops.
Aegitna was established in Vallauris in 1920 by Placide Saltalamacchia. The workshop became associated with functional and decorative ceramics rooted in the pottery traditions of southern France.
This set belongs visually to the exuberant postwar period of Vallauris pottery. Its saturated color, rounded silhouettes, substantial handles and expressive floral decoration capture the optimistic decorative language associated with French Mid-Century ceramics.
The set consists of one tall pitcher and thirteen handled bowls in three graduated sizes. This range makes the collection particularly attractive as a coordinated table setting. The pitcher may be used for water or wine, while the bowls lend themselves to soups, gratins, side dishes, sauces, dips or small servings.
The largest handled bowls are well suited to individual soups or baked dishes; the medium size works naturally for potage, soup and side dishes; and the smallest bowls can serve sauces, dips, butter or condiments.
Age has also left visible traces. Several bowls show localized glaze loss or small chips around the rims, and crazing is present in places. These characteristics are clearly visible in the photographs and form part of the set's vintage condition. Importantly, the pitcher retains its strong sculptural presence and the overall ensemble remains remarkably coherent despite its age.
Finding thirteen graduated handled bowls together with their matching decorated pitcher creates a much stronger visual statement than an isolated piece. Displayed together, the repeated raspberry-pink forms produce an almost architectural rhythm—a distinctive example of colorful French table culture from the Mid-Century period.
